"Can we make a difference in the world?"

Rev. Paula T. Webb

"The deeper the self-realization of a man, the more he influences the whole universe by his subtle spiritual vibrations."  Paramhansa Yogananda

I was at a resort recently to perform a wedding, and while waiting for the ceremony to begin, I struck up a conversation with the Wedding Coordinator for that resort.  A personable young lady, she questioned me as to what type of counseling I performed most ~ relationships or spiritual.  I replied that it was about even between those two topics.  She further asked if I thought that any one person could really make a difference in the world ~ considering just how bad everything is, all across the planet.  She went on to describe all the wars, genocide, animal abuse, starving children, the AIDS epidemic in Africa ~ and the current economic crisis here in the United States.   She searched my face intently as she spoke, and it was apparent that she was distressed to think that the situations within our world were hopeless.

I have to admit, her question took me rather by surprise.  Why?  Because I don?t see the world that way.  I don?t see gloom and doom at all.  I see our planet, meaning all of us, as constantly evolving, and we are in an age of change.  You may ask, how can that be, when you have all the news stating how bad everything is every day?

First, I don?t watch the news on a regular basis.  For the most part, because it is so negative.  Every single news program is full of negativity, and I choose not to fill my head with someone else's negative perspective.  Second, that does not mean I have no idea of what is happening on the planet ~ as a matter of fact, for my life, I feel I probably have a better understanding of what is happening than most people.

Why?  The mere fact that information is instantaneous, means that each and every day, each and every one of us is able to become more aware, and to personally evolve ourselves ~ if we so choose.  The fact that others may not choose to evolve into a spiritually higher being has nothing to do with my energy, or my perspective, so to spend any amount of time thinking about someone else's perspective is literally, a waste of time and energy ~ energy that can be spent on evolving more myself.

So, I choose the following:

  • I believe in the best of people,
  • I know there are many people working to better our planet, and
  • I don't listen to anyone else's negativity.

Meaning, if I hear a news story that I feel is important, I will research the data myself, and not rely on anyone else to give me the details surrounding it.  Why?  In that way, I am becoming a part of the solution ~ not continuing the problem.  How?  By taking an active interest from my own, more positive perspective, I am then sending that positive energy out to the world, to the Universe, to God ~ to assist in alleviating world problems.

Every single atom is alive due to what?  Energy.  The entire Universe is one big field of energy.  Scientists have researched this, and agree on it.  Every single atom, and since we?re made up of billions of atoms ourselves, would it not make sense that our energy can make a difference?  I believe so.

So, the next time you hear someone say, "I am only one person, and can't make a difference"  ~ or even if you have a time when you feel that way ~ remind yourself, and anyone else that yes you can make a difference!

How?  Simple.  Keep in mind that every thought is an action ~ therefore, everyone does make a difference.  Just think on it and change your world, one thought at a time ~ for the better.
